Witness: Debbie Hoover

Scripture: Romans 12: 1-2

Weekly Theme: Hope

Sometimes God moves us to uncomfortable settings to get our attention. A few years ago, I experienced an opportunity to travel to Haiti and participate on a teacher mentoring team to work with teachers from the Haitian culture. Prior to the trip, my life involved teaching 4th grade in a rural Indiana school, focusing on family and volunteering in my local church.

I felt like I was an “average Christian” doing good in my world; however, I was stirred every time I read the words of Romans 12, “Offer your bodies as a living sacrifice . . . Do not be conformed to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” I often wondered, how am I allowing Christ to transform me?

It was in Haiti that I had an experience in which God drew close to me and opened my eyes to the depth of the need around me. Everywhere I looked –- whether in the streets of the village or in the pews of the Haitian church — I was overwhelmed with the sense of God’s presence and of His questions:

Debbie, are you willing to put other things aside?

To change your priorities?

To leave your comfort zone?

These questions caused me to meditate on what I had experienced and to consider next steps. I was touched, drawn, and permanently changed during a Haitian church service. I didn’t understand the words to the songs, prayers, or the sermon, but God was speaking. And I said yes.

Shortly after my return from Haiti, my husband was offered and accepted a new job in the Washington, DC, area. That meant we would be moving to a place that was totally new! Because of my experience in Haiti, I was excited to see where and how God was going to use both of us.

Little did I know that World Hope International (WHI), the organization that I volunteered with in Haiti was relocating to the DC area, and they needed staff. Shortly after our move, I was recruited to launch a volunteer program for relief and development. Unbelievable! Many times, I sat at my desk in DC and prayed, “God, please give this rural Indiana teacher wisdom and courage.” And He always provided His strength.

It’s incredible how God can use us if we say “yes” to Him!

Daily Prayer: Heavenly Father, please give me the courage to listen to you and to follow your plan for each day. Help me make you a priority and help me to be willing to leave my comfort zone to serve those who you put into my life. I want to be your servant. Amen.

Discussion/Reflection Questions:

  1. Has God put a task in front of you, and you are hesitant to take on His challenge?
  2. What priorities might you need to change?
  3. Are you willing to step out of your comfort zone to follow Him?

  1. Debbie: Thanks for sharing the way in which God has awakened and changed your life. Knowing that it wasn’t coincidence but rather God at work changes one’s outlook and focus. What a blessing you have had!

  2. Thank you for this devotional! That “leaving your comfort zone” is definitely something me and God have discussed before……
